How to sort array with insertion sort?

C#  |  .NET  |  Algorithms

In the insertion sort, an array is divided into two parts, namely sorted and unsorted. At the beginning, the first element is included in the sorted part. In each iteration, the algorithm takes the first element from the unsorted part and places it in a suitable location within the sorted part, to leave the sorted part in the correct order. Such operations are repeated until the unsorted part is empty.

The code is as follows:

void Sort(int[] a)
{
    for (int i = 1; i < a.Length; i++)
    {
        int j = i;
        while (j > 0 && a[j] < a[j - 1])
        {
            (a[j], a[j - 1) = (a[j - 1], a[j]);
            j--;
        }
    }
}

If you want to read more about the insertion sort algorithm, as well as about other kinds of sorting algorithms, I encourage you to take a look at the mentioned book. You can buy it here.
